Groningen is expanding eastwards. Over the coming years, the new De Eems neighbourhood will be built between the city centre, Middelbert and Meerstad. The outline is now becoming clearly visible: the first neighbourhood has been named Lintweide. And good news for those who aren’t keen on standard housing developments: there’s a unique opportunity to set up your own housing cooperative.
Anyone who thinks De Eems is a world away is mistaken. With a bit of tailwind, you can cycle from the Grote Markt in just 14 minutes, past the IKEA and over Groningen’s longest cycle bridge, straight into the new neighbourhood.
Why we’re starting construction in Lintweide first
You might be wondering why construction is starting at this particular spot (between Meerstadlaan, Middelberterweg and Kerkpad). The answer lies in the Groningen soil. Whilst many surrounding areas are situated on peat – which first needs to ‘settle’ with sand over many years – Lintweide lies on a sand ridge. This firm ground makes it possible, as soon as the planning permission is in place, to start building a sustainable and affordable neighbourhood more quickly.
A plot for you and your friends?
What makes De Eems different from a standard new-build estate is the scope for new housing concepts. In the Lintweide neighbourhood, a plot has been reserved for a housing cooperative.
This is the perfect opportunity for residents of Groningen who want to take control themselves. In a housing cooperative, you develop and manage a residential building together with a group. You are joint owners, which fosters a strong community and – not unimportantly – ensures long-term affordable rents.
Information session on 4 June
Have you always dreamed of a way of living where neighbourliness and self-determination are central? Bureau Meerstad is organising an information session on Thursday 4 June about the possibilities in Lintweide. Please note: participation is only possible after registering via the De Eems website.
