The Pronkjewail trail has been extended with a brand new East route of some 250 kilometres. So, quite a few extra steps on your pedometer. Along the way, you walk through farmland and get to know the ‘crops of Groningen’. As you are used to from the Pronkjewailpad, you will find stamping points along the way where you can score a ‘Pronkjewail’ for your walking passport. The East Route consists of 13 stages and officially starts on Thursday 3 April.

What is the Pronkjewail trail?

The Pronkjewailpad is a long-distance walk through the province of Groningen, divided into four routes: North, South, West and, recently, East. Think of it as the solo version of the walking event Tocht om de Noord – where walking and culture go hand in hand.

The Tocht om de Noord puts your senses to work. You don’t just walk from A to B, but along the way you get a glimpse of Groningen. Think about tastings, music, art and encounters with locals.

You choose how fanatical you want to be: the daily distances are about 15, 25 or 40 kilometres. In each village on the route, the aim is to score at least one stamp. This is a fun way to get to know Groningen’s hospitality and collect a nice collection of memories (and stamps, of course).

What makes the Pronkjewailpad special

The Pronkjewailpad not only sends you along the most beautiful footpaths, but also inside special places in Groningen – the so-called ‘Pronkjewels’. Think centuries-old churches, stately manor houses, characteristic windmills and local entrepreneurs who welcome you with open arms (and sometimes with something tasty, just saying).

Along the way, you taste local specialities, get a unique behind-the-scenes look at places you wouldn’t normally visit, and experience how hospitable Groningen really is. So the trail is not only good for the legs, but also for the stomach and the curious mind.

The new East Route

You can check out the trail’s latest extension, the Oostroute, on the Pronkjewailpad website. There you will also find a map with all the stamping posts and Pronkjewels. Pretty handy if you want to plan a bit where you’re going to stop for your next stamp!
