Groningen is a lively student city where bikes are everywhere and it sometimes seems like the night never ends. Finding a place to live can be very easy, but sometimes quite difficult, depending on when you are looking and what exactly you are looking for. Don’t worry, I’m going to tell you all about how and where to live in Groningen!
Types of Housing
- University Campuses: The University of Groningen offers limited accommodation through their international service. These places are golden but as scarce as a sunny day in November.
- Private Rooms: The most common option. Think of a room in a shared house or flat, where you share the kitchen, bathroom and sometimes the living room with other students. Cosiness guaranteed!
- Studios and Apartments: For those who want a bit more privacy and are willing to pay for it, there are studios and flats. More expensive, but you have your own place.
Cost
- Rooms: Count on around €350 to €600 per month for a room. The price depends a lot on the size and location.
- Studios and Apartments: These can range from €600 to as much as €1000 or more per month, depending on luxury and location.
Availability
Ah, the big challenge. The start of the academic year sees a rush for rooms. Tip: start your search early, preferably several months before the start of your studies. There are several websites and Facebook groups dedicated to housing in Groningen. But be warned: the competition is fierce.
Tips for the Search
- Network: Make use of your network. Sometimes there are through-via opportunities you won’t find on the big websites.
- Flexibility: Be open to different housing options. Maybe your dream room is not immediately available, but a temporary place can be a good start.
- Be Alert: Pay close attention to offers that seem too good to be true. Unfortunately, scammers are also active.
