Brace your vocal chords, Groningen: Wijck has officially opened its doors in the striking white Merckt building on the Grote Markt. After years of waiting, the place is finally buzzing with life – with two restaurants, a cocktail bar, a large terrace and a cellar full of surprises.
From empty shell to hotspot
The building had been waiting to be filled in since 2021. A food hall was originally planned, but that plan fell through. Political questions followed, the city grumbled, and it remained a conspicuous empty shell on the Grote Markt. Until four Groningen entrepreneurs joined forces and came up with the idea for Wijck.
What can you expect there?

Ground floor: a restaurant and cocktail bar with space for over a hundred guests, plus a private dining area.

Mezzanine floor: a bistro where you can have coffee or even work with your laptop.

Terrace: 150 seats around the building, ideal for sunny afternoons.

Basement (Wijckhuis): four karaoke booths, a kids’ corner and space for parties. Comedy Club Wicked will also launch here soon – the first comedy club in the north of the Netherlands.
Ode to Groningen with a worldly touch
According to the owners, Wijck should be a place that fits in with Groningen but has an international vibe. From cocktails to karaoke, from bistro to comedy club: there is always something happening here.
After the closure of Rooftop Merckt and years of vacancy, the Grote Markt has a new hotspot. Whether you fancy an evening of karaoke with friends, a sunny afternoon on the terrace or a comedy show: Wijck is the new place to go.
